TechBuzz Site Grows Strong In Past Year

TechBuzz took the leap from a print only publication to a combination print/web publication on May 6, 2004.

Since then as you our readers know, there have been many changes, some good and some not so good.

The pride of TechBuzz has been and is still our website. In the beginning the TechBuzz site started as a small site, with just a few stories and was not even indexed in search engines, today with over 25,000 hits in March, techbuzz.iun.edu is listed in all search engines and in fact if you go to Google, type in TechBuzz and click “I Feel Lucky” you will automatically be taken to our website.

In December our website went through a major redesign and was offline for three weeks. We would like to thank those who emailed us during that time to ask what was going on and those who also gave us input.

The new site was designed to leave many possibilities to add new features. One of those features added during the redesign is that of streaming video. All of our video is high quality and designed to play on any standard cable modem or DSL connection.

In addition we are currently testing a new bulletin board and blog system to launch in the fall. This will be a place for the IUN community as well as our worldwide visitors to post and reply to comments, instant message each other and create customized profiles with avatars.

Another change you may have noticed since the redesign is that of breaking news video. When big news breaks we will try to have live video from one of our video sources on our site immediately. These live streams are Windows Media format and will automatically appear in a special alert area on techbuzz.iun.edu.

It is important to thank the media outlets that provide us the streams. They are:

  • WBBM-TV2 CBS Chicago
  • WSVN-TV7 FOX Miami
  • WXIA-TV11 NBC Atlanta
  • WFOR-TV4 CBS Miami
  • KCAL-TV9 IND Los Angeles
  • WHDH-TV7 NBC Boston

We have, through our sources, covered a wide range of events in the past year. Here are some of the national events we have broadcasted:

  • Hurricane Charley
  • Hurricane Frances
  • Hurricane Ivan
  • Hurricane Jeanne
  • Election 2004
  • Terry Schiavo Case / Death
  • Death of Pope John Paul III
  • Election of Pope Benedict XVI

We will continue to strive to bring you the latest news in technology from the campus community and from around the globe. We realize that the live feeds we have posted had nothing to do with technology on the surface, however we are using the technology available to us to it’s fullest and that brings us 360 ° back to where we started, reporting on technology, and how to use it to your benefit.

Please take a moment to look at the chart below to see exactly how our site has grown in the past year.
